Manawatu Breeders Show

Summary

It was a day of firsts for our Latano youngstock - first time turned out (washed, clipped, plaited); first time travelling in a truck (they learned to float and truck the day before); first time away from home (with a couple of exceptions - Latrose was a foal at foot with Rosie at Manawatu show) and first youngstock championship sash for one of 's Latano progeny.

Highlights

TP JK Roseanne won Champion Adult - winning back the trophy Latano won last year.

TP Latte Time (TP JK Latano/JK Mushroom/JK Maserati) won Reserve Champion Youngstock.

Commentary

We took all our youngstock bar one to the Manawatu Breeders Show today to compete in the in-hand sport horse classes.

Unfortunately our two year old gelding, TP Latest Affair (Laddy), couldn't fit in the truck as Great Uncle Beeches - our yearlings' babysitte - was required for some hand-holding.

We were ecstatic with the results but more importantly their true Latano nature showed through - calm, confident, and quality conformation.

Our judge recommended we bring a truck load up to the North Island All Breeds Inhand Show held in Cambridge at the beginning of January - but we think it's a long way to go for a baby horse... we might take some of the older stock and will keep you posted.

Full Results

TP Latrusso (TP JK Latano/TP JK Roseanne/Romedio) - 1st Foal class; 2nd Foal Futurity (which was after lunch and his big snooze, he was a tad tired by this point) - our judge commented that Rusty was a lovely type, moved straight and will be one to watch.  Handled by Liz (surname to be advised) with great compassion and patience - she managed to train Rusty to lead and turn by the end of the show.

TP Latte Time (TP JK Latano/JK Mushroom/JK Maserati) - Reserve Champion Youngstock; 1st Yearling class; 4th Suitability for Dressage - Latte was a big brave girl and set the pace early on. Handled by Jo Spence exceptionally well - Jo was a real pro and we wish she could handle all our youngstock at their first outings.

TP Lattimer Fair (TP JK Latano/Luskin Affair XX/Star of Luskin XX) - 3rd Yearling class - Fairy caught the spectators' eyes with her flashy movement and happily settled down to grazing next to Great Uncle Beeches after her classes.  Fairy was very brave climbing into the truck to go home, as she had the last spot and had to get in with her front legs then turn and bring her hind legs up and around.  Handled by Laura Mowbray with great patience and kindness.

TP Latrose (TP JK Latano/TP JK Roseanne/Romedio) - 2nd Two year old class; called in for suitability for Dressage but narrowly pipped at the post (judge said it was extremely close); our judge came over to the truck after classes had completed to meet Latrose and said she would grow into a stunning horse.  At the moment she is rather bum high (at 16.1hh in front this bodes for a BIG mare) so her movement behind is huge but up front it has a wee bit of growing to do!  Handled with great tact by Lucy (surname to be supplied) who was rather puffed after trotting her out so many times (Lucy was a professional jockey!).

TP JK Roseanne (Romedio) - Champion Adult ; 1st Mare class; 1st Suitability for Jumping -  Rosie has done this before so no surprises there... but was very patient with other horses coming near her foal - merely grinding her teeth and swishing her tail to warn them to back off.  Rosie is our foundation broodmare and shows the quality of broodmare we insist upon for our own stud stock.  Handled by me (Margo Aasen) who got more exercise in one day than in all the months since I broke my neck in January!

A BIG thanks to all our handlers for their kindness and patience with our babies.  We are checking ground conditions for Feildign A&P Show before late entering; and entering them into the National Horse and Pony Show mid-February.
